THE CONCEPT OF LOVE.
LOVE,
A common word.
Yet,
So misunderstood.
Of a true, many people make use of the word ‘LOVE’ as often as they speak.
“Oh, I love that skirt”, is just one out of a million ways the word ‘LOVE’ is used by men.
However, many people have not come to the understanding of depth of what the word ‘LOVE’ means.
It’s so easy to make use of a word and not even understand or even know the concept behind the word.
In the world we live in, love has been interpreted to be so many vain things. Things like; sweet words, gifts, sex, kisses & romance, showing one of to family and friends and many more….
These are relevant to the marriage level kind of love.
Unfortunately, this generation has become very skilled in eating food meant for adults and cleaning mouth. As funny as it might sound, it’s so true.
90% of secular romantic relationships are characterized by the aforementioned. Most girls take pride in these things thereby engaging the other gender to do more. They even go as far as comparing and guaging each other’s partners by this standard.
Genuine love(the God kind of love) is becoming scarce even in the body of Christ.
But if love isn’t sex, giving gifts &money, what then is it?
St. John 15:13(NLT) gives us a glimpse of what it is; “And here is how to measure it—the greatest love is shown when people lay down their lives for their friends.”
St. John 3:16(NLT) also says something; “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”
SACRIFICE!
GIVING!
The first verse tells us how to measure the love that men shown us. It says that when men lay down their lives for us, it depicts love.
Now, Jesus died for us all to live freely.
There is no need to die for any man, men can’t really die for anyone. However, the laying down your life here can be translated into sacrificing your time, energy, resources and life to support a friend.
Men’s inability to die for each other just shows how frail the love men have for each other.
However, 1 John 4:12(NLT) says “No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love has been brought to full expression through us.”
This is teaching is that we do not know how to love as we ought to. This isn’t an encouragement to live your life loveless.
It says here that if we make attempts, in our own little way to love as we ought to, God, living in us, will teach us and express His kind of love through us.
It’s also saying that the proof that we are God’s people is that we have the quality of LOVE. The world cannot love but we stand out by expressing love to each other and the world at large.
1 John 4:8(NLT) says; “But anyone who does not love does not know God—for God is love.”
God expects us to show love, though man has not the ability to express the expected kind of God’s love.
The verse before this already explained to us that of we make it a resolution in our heart to love God, He would help us by expressing Himself through us.
But, if we must make attempts to love, we must know the scriptural standard of love.
There are so many standards of love scattered all over the bible. In our next blog post, we’ll look at a chapter in the bible (my personal favorite when discussing the subject of love) that teaches expressly about love.
Till then,
-Make attempts to show love.
-Guage your daily activities with the life of Jesus.
-Pray for help from above.
-Be slow to speak and compassionate.
-Learn to look inward at actions before taking actions.
God helping us, we would know exactly how to express love after this series.
Amen!
