Studying The Scriptures.
In this new year, it is crucial that we begin on a good note. This would be the basis of our success this year, if we must succeed.
The word of God (scriptures) is the voice of God Himself. As my mentor will say, you must hear the voice of God daily. It is crucial to the success of every day that the voice of God takes preeminence and control of the daily activities of every child of Abba.
In our daily lives, we just replicate what the scriptures say. We must live like people who know God. We must be a living example of the word of God.
Jesus was known first as the son of God because His life fulfilled a prophecy. What prophecy? The prophesy in the scriptures. He lived like the scriptures said He would.
As children of God, our lives have been encoded in the scrolls of heaven. They have been transmitted into the bible you’re carrying. Only by revelation and serious study can you know what is written therein as relates to you.
The Apostles of old lived their lives according to what God fashioned it. They met the word in flesh. They knew what He was like. They knew what they were supposed to look like through beholding Him.
Today, we read about them and we pray for God to make us better than them. However, this can only be attained at the feet of Jesus as a student(studying the scscriptures).
Another reason why we should be determined to study the scriptures is embedded in St. John 1:14; “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”(KJV).
This scripture tells alot. The word who is Jesus came to dwell among men. In those time, He came as a man. After He left, He registered His presence as the word by inspiring the Apostles to write the book we call the Holy Bible.
Let me explain.
Let me start by saying that the earnest will of every Christian is to know God more. And to achieve that, the revelation of the scriptures must be present. We grow in the kingdom by revelation. Without revelation, we will remain in one spot.
Just as a man gets wiser by reading books so would a spiritual man get spiritual stature by studying the Scriptures. The bible could have said power came down and dwelt in flesh but it didn’t.
Above all the power and grace, Jesus was a man of thw word. The more you read the scriptures, the more you see Jesus. The more you read, the more you encounter Him. The more you acquire grace too because He is full of grace.
Many people imagine that encounters are only found in the place of prayer. An unpopular fact is that encounters are birthed from the scriptures. Power is in the scriptures. Faith is in the scriptures.
Romans 10:17 says; “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”(KJV). The scripture is Jesus. As you study, something grows inside.
When that thing growing inside bursts forth, it birts encounters. Encounters must be a daily thing. The same way scripture study must be daily. We mustn’t go a day without growing or seeing Jesus.
Many people find many ignorant reasons not to read their bible. However, all their reasons can be narrowed down to this two;
1. Ignorance.
Ignorance, they say, is a disease. The bible clearly said that we should never be ignorant either of the devices of the devil or what is written in the word. So many people lack the knowledge of the value of the scriptures.
When you meet a firebrand child of God, he will ever advice you to study the scriptures. Apostle Edu, Apostle Arome Osayi and Apostle Joshua Selman all at one point or the other in their life, spent up to 20 hours studying the Scriptures. Why? Because they weren’t ignorant of the value.
2. No Hunger.
A hungry man is always looking for ways to satisfy himself. I’ve never seen a hungry man see food and reject it. Except the food is poisoned.
When you know that Jesus is the word and you crave Him daily, tell me why you will not dig deep into the Scriptures. Only a man that is full will reject food. Fortunately, you can never be filled enough to reject more of God.
Studying the Scriptures shouldn’t be because you want to tick a register that you’ve read your bible today. It shouldn’t be because you want to go to church and boast that you read your bible that day.
We should move past studying to impress or to share Rhema. We should move past studying to teach. We should move past studying to cause impactations. These are good but they aren’t the basis.
Rather, it should be because you want to find God it should be because you want a closer walk with Him and you know the key to it is in the scriptures. It should be because you want to be like Him. Therefore, you search His words to get to know Him.
After all by His words and works, you will know Him. Through these words, you are then transformed to be like Him.
Amen!
In studying the scriptures, there are two directions;
1. Reading the bible: 1 Timothy 4:13 says; “Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.”(KJV).
This means that there’s a place for reading. Reading is just to have knowledge of the scriptures. Reading just tells you that ‘ABCD’ exists in the bible.
2. Studying the bible: 2 Timothy 2:15 says; “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”(KJV).
This tells us that studying gives you above the shallow knowledge. It gives you the ability to disect and extract from the scriptures. It empowers you to be a defendant of the words of God.
How To STUDY The Scriptures.
I know that reading is good. As a matter of fact, reading helps you to memorize and retain scriptures. Studying however gives you revelations and empowers your mind to become better. We study by;
1. Meditating.
Meditation is a state where you ruminate on the scriptures over and over again to a point that they are open to you like a book. Meditation helps you to rid yourself of the influence of your mind.
Meditation is a strategy to improve and increase the volume of the voice of God in your heart. When you meditate often, you will open your mind to interpretations of the scriptures.
2. Asking For Help.
The bible isn’t powerful because of it’s words. It’s powerful because it has the life of God in it. It is powerful because the Holy Ghost is the only tutor of it.
Studying comes deep revelation of the word of God. Only the Holy Spirit can teach and impact God’s word to you. Studying is making the Holy Spirit included in your study.
