Keeping A Sound Mind.



The human mind is a very controversial thing to talk about. Reason being that there is still a high level of obnoxiousness around the subject matter. The human mind is still having a mysterious aura to so many people. Hence me putting together this article.

According to the dictionary’s meaning, the mind is regarded as the ability to be aware of things, have rational thoughts, remember things, focus the thoughts, possess certain mental qualities, have a healthy mental state and much more.

It is also defined as a continuous prayer on a dead person’s behalf for a period after their death. These definitions aren’t a hundred percent (100%) wrong but they aren’t a hundred percent (100%) right either. These definitions are only able to convey about thirty percent (30%) of the true definition of the human mind.

The human mind has proven to be more than just an ability. The human mind has portrayed itself more relevant than possessing a particular mental status. Personally, take a look at your own mind. Is it just an ability you possess? I doubt you think it is.

In the course of my study, I stumbled on a compelling definition of the human mind. According to philosophy, the human mind can be described as the non-material substance or set of processes in which consciousness, perception, affectivity, judgement and will be based.

It is simply saying that the human mind is a possession or part that does some specific functions including making judgment, having beliefs, awakening consciousness about things and so many more.

This particular definition caught my attention because it was able to synergize and produce a real and relatable definition. However, it is missing a final tough. The Holy Bible is the only book that gives a unifying definition of the mind.

The bible states that “as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he”. Indicating that your everyday life is based solely on the state of your mind. Further leading us to the conclusion that you are a product of your mind. Your mind is you, you are your mind.

Your everyday actions and decisions will slowly shape your mind, which will in turn shape you. This human mind is such an important place that it is necessary to preserve and keep it in a beautiful state.

The human mind is therefore divided into two sections:

1. The conscious mind.
2.The subconscious mind.

1. The Conscious Mind.
This is a very free and open section of the mind. It is the part of the mind that welcomes all thoughts; good or evil. It has the ability and receptivity to acquire fresh thoughts on a regular basis.

This part of the mind is where trivial things can be conceived, sieved and moved to the next section of the mind. It is crucial to note that this part of the mind cannot generate thoughts by itself. Thoughts naturally pour in through different medium like movies, situations, discussions, books, news etc

2. The Subconscious Mind.
This section of the mind constitutes seventy percent (70%) of the human mind. In this part of the mind, formulation of beliefs take place, decisions are taken, grudges and past events and situations are stored. It’s typically the most difficult part of the mind to handle.

It is a hard nut to crack because all thoughts (I repeat, All Thoughts) stored here have been transported from the conscious mind. The only way these thoughts get here is by constantly dwelling upon them. From the archive of thoughts and decisions are all new decisions and reactions taken. This is the part of the mind that shapes and reforms you.


From all indications, the mind is the most powerful tool to anyone; man or spirit. All problems first of all spring forth from the mind. All actions are first taken in the mind before it comes to reality.

Nobody wakes up hating a brother or sister. It’s a slow process starting from the conscious mind, where the thought is conceived. Then moving on to the subconscious mind after much dwelling on.

When a thought settles in the subconscious mind, it would begin to reflect in words and actions. The thought comes alive and begins to take effect and affect things. No thought goes directly to the subconscious mind. There’s a process to be followed.

People suffering from depression or acute sadness are people who have dwelt on saddening situations and circumstances for too long. The thoughts has gradually diffused into their hearts. A singular sad story can plunge one into depression by simply dwelling on it.

These things have effect only because they are dwelt upon. Consequently, it is expedient that all negative thoughts should be trashed out with immediate effect right from the budding stage, the conscious mind, because it becomes harder to deal with at the subconscious mind.

However, a thought cannot flee from your mind without another entering. Even if it goes away if you do not regulate what flows into your mind, it would find it’s way back.

Just like spreading rice on the ground and not having enough manpower to cover it and to prevent it from birds. With time the bird will fill up the place. Even if you chase them away, because you aren’t capable of covering and controlling them, they would return more determined.

Changing a corrupted mind isn’t instant, it takes time. Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable β€”if anything is excellent or praiseworthy β€”think about such things.” (NIV).

This is a very potent dose of change. As long as something is not pure and has no excellence in it, it shouldn’t be given audience in your mind. The mistake so many people make is that they feel helpless to their thoughts.

They allow and accommodate evil thoughts liberally. In the long run, they are subjected to the control of such thoughts because they have them the leverage to control them by not showing them the door at the early stage. If a thought makes it to the subconscious mind, it would take twice the effort to trash out.

To avoid allowing evil thoughts, you should fill your mind to the brim with positivity and excellence. Sadly, the world we live in doesn’t give much room for happy thoughts. There always has to be something to get worked up over.

However, if you anchor your happiness and joy on Jesus, you would be bubbling each day as if you were from another place. Oh, right. we aren’t from earth. We are from a place above the earth. The bible says, “we are in the world but not of the world”.

Indicating that although we are physically present here, all drive is on heaven. Our source is in heaven. Why don’t you just tap into that plug of unending joy and happiness? It is like a sigh or relief because you don’t have to bother about negative energy anymore. Your source is heaven.

Another potent source is the word of God. Psalm 119:105 says, “the word of God is a lamp onto my feet and a light unto my path”. Indicating that the word of Jesus keeps us in the check and tells us what to do every step of the way. Light is a beautiful thing. Imagine having a light in your heart forever.

No more sorrow. Think on the beautiful word of God today and be transformed. Remember, Proverbs 14:30 says, “A calm and undisturbed mind and heart are the life and health of the body, but envy, jealousy, and wrath are like rottenness of the bones.” (AMP).
